Congratulations on your interest in the hobby of beekeeping. We are certain you will find beekeeping an enjoyable and rewarding hobby that can be shared by young and older alike. Not only will you receive the obvious reward of a naturally sweet honey crop, but also the little known benefits to the backyard garden.

Common garden plants such as melons, cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, blueberries, raspberries and most fruit trees including apple and pear require insect pollination to set fruit. The honeybee is the most efficient insect pollinator. Bees visit these flowers to obtain pollen, the sole source of protein in the honeybee diet. Multiple visits to a flower increase the size of the fruit, the number of seeds, and the consistency in the shape of the fruit. The seeds inside a fruit produce the sugar that makes the fruit sweet; therefore, the greater the number of pollinated seeds, the sweeter the fruit.

For the beginning beekeeper, they suggest taking a class on beekeeping. These can generally be found by contacting the entomology (study of insects) department at your local university, you can also check with your local department of agriculture. These classes will teach you all the basics of beekeeping in your area and help you get familiar with the terms and equipment used in keeping bees. Join a local beekeeping club or organization.

Calaveras Lumber Company is a full-service lumberyard and hardware retail store meeting the needs of homebuilders, remodelers, and the do-it-yourselfers.

Their fleet of trucks delivers lumber and building materials across California and parts of Nevada. The retail store features hardware, tools, building materials, electrical, plumbing, housewares, Benjamin Moore paint, gifts and home decor, nursery, patio furniture, BBQs and a seasonal Christmas store.

Calaveras Lumber Company is part of the Ace Hardware family, along with their other branch Sonora Lumber Company.

Jerome Kaufman, along with his brother, Manual (Mickey), and several other associates, form Alside. Alside quickly becomes one of the largest users of sheet aluminum in the world.
After seeing how paint bonds to aluminum fuselages on World War II planes, Jerome Kaufman, owner of one of the largest retail home improvement dealers in the U.S., invents the first residential baked enamel aluminum siding.

1997

Nationwide Alside Supply Centers continue to expand with the addition of four new locations.
Alside celebrates 50 years in the home improvement industry.
In addition to the corporate headquarters in Akron, Ohio, Alside consists of three window manufacturing facilities, two vinyl extrusion plants, 65 company-owned Supply Centers and a research and development facility. Alside also consists of three divisions that offer fencing, garage doors and Eurostyle cabinetry for kitchen and bath.

A SEED IS PLANTED (Early 1970's): As graduate students' parents, Kathleen Barsotti and Martin Barnes, realized the potential harm of modern agriculture’s reliance on unnatural methods and chemicals, especially the overuse of DDT. They began to believe there was a real chance that they, and others in their generation, could reexamine and fight to rebuild the food system that nourished our communities.

A FARM & MARKET In 1976, their parents’ dream took root with the purchase of their own 20-acre farm and the decision to join forces with like-minded friends to open the Davis Farmers Market. This connection of farmers and community truly marked the early stages of the organic foods movement. Small organic farms like theirs had a platform to not only sell the fruits of their labor, but also introduce the concept of “organic” produce, one delicious bite at a time.

GROWING THE GOOD WE CAN DO (Today) The farm is able to create lasting change in our community by joining forces with organizations focused on healthy eating and sustainable agriculture. This year alone, they donated over 100,000 lbs of organic produce to local food banks and with your help, provided over 10,000 Farm Fresh To You boxes to individuals and families facing hunger. They are proud to support numerous farm-to-school programs and health organizations. Thank you again for your contributions and continued support.

Three years after OrePac Building Products was founded, they built their first branch in Sacramento. Almost 40 years later, the Sacramento branch has 15 private trucks and 240,000 square feet of warehouse space on 12 acres of land. The branch runs multiple shifts every weekday, starting with door production at 5:00 am and ending with delivery truck loading at 2:00 am. Although the Sacramento branch services areas far outside the city, the branch is proud to be a part of the state capital and the central hub to all of Northern California. Reaching outside of Sacramento, the truck drivers find themselves amongst a booming agriculture of fruit tree, rice, and almond crops.
