The front uprights get in the way, loads overhang the beams, and nothing sits the way it should. Cantilever rack is the system built specifically for these loads, and it solves the problem by getting the columns out of the front of the bay entirely. This guide covers what cantilever rack is, the parts it's made of, the choices you'll face when specifying a system, and — because we're in California — the seismic and permit requirements that most national guides skip. What Cantilever Rack Is (and When You Need It) A cantilever rack is built around vertical columns with horizontal arms that project out from one or both sides — like a series of tall, sturdy shelf brackets. Because the arms cantilever outward from the column, there's no upright at the front of the load. You get one long, open storage face with nothing to work around. That open face is the whole point. It's what lets a forklift slide a 20-foot bundle of lumber onto the arms in one smooth motion, and it's what lets you store items of different lengths side by side without reconfiguring anything. Cantilever rack uses a different vocabulary than pallet rack. Four main components make up every system: Columns The vertical members that carry the load down to the floor. Column height and strength determine how tall you can build and how much total weight the tower can hold. The combined weight of everything on all the arms transfers through the column. Bases The horizontal feet that bolt to the bottom of each column and anchor to the floor. The base extends forward under the arms to resist tipping — the deeper the base, the more overturning force the rack can handle. Base depth is one of the most important and most overlooked specs, especially for tall or heavily loaded systems. Arms The horizontal load-bearing members that project out from the column. Arms attach at set increments up the column, so you can adjust level heights as your loads change. Each arm has its own rated capacity, and arm length should roughly match the depth of the load it carries. Braces Horizontal and cross (X) braces tie the columns together into a rigid row and set the spacing between towers. Bracing is what turns a line of individual columns into one stable structure. Cantilever rack comes in two basic configurations, and the right one depends on where the rack will sit. Single-sided Arms project from one side of the column only. Single-sided rack is designed to sit against a wall, so it has a deeper base to counterbalance the load that all hangs on one side. It's the right choice for perimeter storage and narrower buildings. Double-sided Arms project from both sides of a shared central column. Because the loads on each side counterbalance each other, double-sided rack is very efficient — it roughly doubles your storage per column and stands freely in the middle of a floor, accessible from both aisles. It's the workhorse configuration for high-volume lumberyards and distribution operations. Roll-Formed vs. Structural: Matching the Rack to the Weight Cantilever rack is manufactured in two grades, and choosing the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake buyers make. Roll-formed (light to medium duty) Made from lighter-gauge steel that's shaped by rollers. Roll-formed systems are more economical and perfectly suited to lighter, high-turnover inventory — think retail lumber, PVC pipe, moldings, and lighter distribution loads. Arms adjust easily, often without bolts. Structural (heavy duty) Built from hot-rolled structural steel — the same I-beam profiles used in building construction. Structural cantilever handles the heaviest loads: large-diameter steel pipe, bar stock, coils, and long bundles that would overwhelm a roll-formed system. It costs more, but for heavy or high-impact environments it's the only right answer. It also stands up better to the occasional forklift bump that comes with handling long loads. Rule of thumb: if you're storing steel, large pipe, or anything where a dropped load could do real damage, price out structural. If you're storing lighter building materials with a fork truck that's handled carefully, roll-formed will usually save you money without giving up what you need.
