Cantilever Rack: The Complete Guide to Storing Lumber, Pipe, and Long Loads
A plain-English guide to how cantilever rack works, how to spec it, and what California requires

If you store anything long, heavy, or awkwardly shaped — lumber, steel bar stock, pipe, tubing, conduit, drywall, moldings, furniture, or carpet rolls — standard pallet rack fights you at every turn. The front uprights get in the way, loads overhang the beams, and nothing sits the way it should. Cantilever rack is the system built specifically for these loads, and it solves the problem by getting the columns out of the front of the bay entirely.
This guide covers what cantilever rack is, the parts it's made of, the choices you'll face when specifying a system, and — because we're in California — the seismic and permit requirements that most national guides skip. Whether you're outfitting a lumber yard, a steel service center, or a manufacturing floor, this is what you need to know before you buy.

What Cantilever Rack Is (and When You Need It)
A cantilever rack is built around vertical columns with horizontal arms that project out from one or both sides — like a series of tall, sturdy shelf brackets. Because the arms cantilever outward from the column, there's no upright at the front of the load. You get one long, open storage face with nothing to work around.
That open face is the whole point. It's what lets a forklift slide a 20-foot bundle of lumber onto the arms in one smooth motion, and it's what lets you store items of different lengths side by side without reconfiguring anything.
The simplest way to know whether you need cantilever rack: if the load is longer than it is wide, and it doesn't sit neatly on a pallet, cantilever rack is almost always the right tool.
Typical loads cantilever rack is built for
  • Dimensional lumber, timbers, and plywood or sheet goods
  • Steel bar stock, angle iron, channel, and tubing
  • Pipe and conduit — PVC, steel, copper
  • Drywall, trim, molding, and long extrusions
  • Furniture, mattresses, and rolled goods like carpet or vinyl
  • Raw stock feeding a manufacturing or fabrication line
The Anatomy of a Cantilever Rack
Cantilever rack uses a different vocabulary than pallet rack. Four main components make up every system:
Columns
The vertical members that carry the load down to the floor. Column height and strength determine how tall you can build and how much total weight the tower can hold. The combined weight of everything on all the arms transfers through the column.
Bases
The horizontal feet that bolt to the bottom of each column and anchor to the floor. The base extends forward under the arms to resist tipping — the deeper the base, the more overturning force the rack can handle. Base depth is one of the most important and most overlooked specs, especially for tall or heavily loaded systems.
Arms
The horizontal load-bearing members that project out from the column. Arms attach at set increments up the column, so you can adjust level heights as your loads change. Each arm has its own rated capacity, and arm length should roughly match the depth of the load it carries.
Braces
Horizontal and cross (X) braces tie the columns together into a rigid row and set the spacing between towers. Bracing is what turns a line of individual columns into one stable structure.

Single-Sided vs. Double-Sided
Cantilever rack comes in two basic configurations, and the right one depends on where the rack will sit.
Single-sided
Arms project from one side of the column only. Single-sided rack is designed to sit against a wall, so it has a deeper base to counterbalance the load that all hangs on one side. It's the right choice for perimeter storage and narrower buildings.
Double-sided
Arms project from both sides of a shared central column. Because the loads on each side counterbalance each other, double-sided rack is very efficient — it roughly doubles your storage per column and stands freely in the middle of a floor, accessible from both aisles. It's the workhorse configuration for high-volume lumberyards and distribution operations.
Roll-Formed vs. Structural: Matching the Rack to the Weight
Cantilever rack is manufactured in two grades, and choosing the wrong one is the most common and most expensive mistake buyers make.
Roll-formed (light to medium duty)
Made from lighter-gauge steel that's shaped by rollers. Roll-formed systems are more economical and perfectly suited to lighter, high-turnover inventory — think retail lumber, PVC pipe, moldings, and lighter distribution loads. Arms adjust easily, often without bolts.
Structural (heavy duty)
Built from hot-rolled structural steel — the same I-beam profiles used in building construction. Structural cantilever handles the heaviest loads: large-diameter steel pipe, bar stock, coils, and long bundles that would overwhelm a roll-formed system. It costs more, but for heavy or high-impact environments it's the only right answer. It also stands up better to the occasional forklift bump that comes with handling long loads.
Rule of thumb: if you're storing steel, large pipe, or anything where a dropped load could do real damage, price out structural. If you're storing lighter building materials with a fork truck that's handled carefully, roll-formed will usually save you money without giving up what you need.
Straight vs. Inclined Arms
Arms come in two profiles, and the choice comes down to whether your load wants to roll.
  • Straight arms sit level and are standard for stable, stackable loads like lumber and sheet goods.
  • Inclined arms tilt upward a few degrees toward the column so round or unstable loads — pipe, tubing, coils — settle back against the column instead of rolling off the front.
Most systems can mix both. Many operations run inclined arms on the levels holding pipe and straight arms everywhere else.
How to Size a Cantilever System: What to Measure
A good quote starts with good information. Before you talk to any supplier — including us — gather these numbers, and you'll get an accurate system the first time instead of a rough guess:
  • Load weight. The heaviest single item and the total weight you'll stack per arm level. This drives arm and column capacity.
  • Load length. The longest item you'll store. Long loads span multiple columns, so this sets your column spacing.
  • Load depth (front-to-back). This determines arm length. Arms should support the load without letting it hang off the end.
  • Number of levels and vertical spacing. How tall each stored bundle is, and how many levels you need. This sets column height.
  • Single- or double-sided. Against a wall, or freestanding in the middle of the floor?
  • Indoor or outdoor. Outdoor systems need galvanized or painted steel to resist the weather.
  • Floor slab. Slab thickness and condition determine anchoring — critical for a rack that resists tipping.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Storage
Cantilever rack is one of the few storage systems that works just as well outside as it does inside. Lumberyards and building-material suppliers routinely run double-sided cantilever rows in the yard, sometimes with a simple roof structure added on top so a single row does double duty — storing product on the arms and providing covered, drive-through storage underneath. For outdoor use, specify galvanized or properly painted steel; raw steel left in the weather won't last.
The California Factor: Permits and Seismic Engineering
This is the section national guides skip — and for cantilever rack in California, it matters even more than it does for pallet rack. Here's why: cantilever rack carries its load out in front of the column, off-center by design. That eccentric loading, combined with California's seismic exposure, makes overturning the central engineering concern. A tall, loaded cantilever row that isn't properly based and anchored is a genuine tip-over hazard in an earthquake.
Just like pallet rack, cantilever systems over the California Building Code height threshold require a building permit and PE-stamped seismic engineering before installation. The engineer calculates site-specific seismic loads and specifies base depth, anchor type and embedment, and any required bracing. Skipping this isn't just a code problem — with cantilever rack, the physics of an unanchored, front-loaded tower in a seismic event are genuinely dangerous.

New vs. Used Cantilever Rack
Just like pallet rack, used cantilever rack is one of the best values in the warehouse. Structural cantilever in particular is built to last for decades, and a well-inspected used system can save you a substantial amount over new — as long as it's graded properly and the columns, bases, and arms are matched and sound.
